A home transformed

Home upgrade project results in significant energy improvements

The O’Meara family started the upgrade to their home in May 2020 and have been enjoying the benefits of their new Grant heating system since works were completed in September 2020.

Originally a 1,200 sq. ft semi-detached house with an outdated heating system featuring a non-condensing oil boiler and solid fuel, the property underwent a large renovation and extension to the rear. The main aim for the O’Meara family with their upgrade was to create additional space and install a highly efficient and sustainable home heating system for the future.

The project was overseen by Paul O’Meara who is a building contractor, and the homeowner dealt with the Grant Design Team on every aspect of the upgrade to their heating system. A 13kW Grant Aerona3 R32 air to water, air source heat pump was sized for the newly extended 2,300 sq ft house, supported by a Grant pre-plumbed and pre-wired cylinder.  Paul and his wife Jecella wanted evenly dispersed heating throughout their new open plan kitchen and living area and so opted for the Grant Uflex underfloor heating system. Old radiators were removed from the first floor of the home and replaced by Grant Afinia aluminium radiators in each room. To complete the heating system neoStats were installed as part of the heating controls to the home.

“I found the Grant technical team and aftersales service very helpful and efficient in any aspect of queries they may have had. The service also helped to save time on the project as we knew the heating system was sized and specified correctly.”

The Transformation

The upgrade to this home was something Jecella had thought long and hard about. It was the family's opportunity to change the dynamic of the house significantly.

“Our home transformation included turning the house from a three bed to a four-bed home and adding a new kitchen, dining, and living area to the rear of the property. When we initially started the project our BER rating was a C3 and we are delighted now to have reached an A3 rating since the completion of our project” added Jecella. "I wanted to create an open planned living area where we could really enjoy the space as a family".

The O'Meara family applied for a government grant through the SEAI for their insulation and heat pump and were successful in their application. This is a vital support for homeowners when transitioning their home heating to renewable energy.

The Heating Products

The Grant design team provides a free home heating design service to those undertaking new build projects and deep retrofit projects. As part of this project the team completed heat loss calculations for the property and used this information to size and specify the products required for their home

Specifications

The 13kW Grant Aerona³ R32 air to water, air source heat pump was sized by the Grant design team. The 13kW heat pump is recognised by Quiet Mark, which is the independent, international approved award programme associated with the UK Noise Abatement Society. Grant’s Aerona³ R32 heat pump range has an ErP rating of A+++ which reflects its excellent efficiency, and the range is designed to make installation, servicing ad maintenance for heating engineers as easy as possible. Grants state of the art training facility runs regular courses on the Grant Aerona³ R32 heat pump range and overs all aspects of the installation and servicing of the range.

The Grant Uflex underfloor heating system was installed in the new ground floor extension the initial stages of the property’s development. Paul and Jecella chose underfloor heating for their home for many reasons including wanting an unobtrusive heat source which wouldn’t be blocked by any furniture, to have a constant room temperature and for increased hygiene due to reduced air circulation in transferring dust particles.

“As part of our project it was important for us to move away from the oil and solid fuel heating our home and to install sustainable heating products that are proven to be more environmentally friendly. Our heating costs have reduced compared to what they would have been with our previous heating system, with our weekly running costs averaging €22.50 per week during 2021.”
